4 Tips for Combating Winter Dryness

By Qhemet Biologics

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Whether that's summer or winter for you, if you live in a low humidity climate, give your hair the additional protection it needs to mitigate dryness and breakage. When there's less moisture in the air, your hair, scalp and skin can quickly become dry and irritated, leading to a host of problems that can range from the ongoing bad hair day to dandruff and eczema. A proper hair care routine is central to maintaining a healthy and beautiful mane year round.

1. Skip the Sulfates

Sulfates are a common ingredient in soaps and shampoos because they are a very cheap way to add lather. We tend to associate lather with cleanliness, however, because sulfates dissolve oils, they wash away not just dirt but also the valuable layer of protective sebum your scalp and skin needs in order to stay moisturized. This leads to tightness, redness, itching and hair follicle damage - a major contributor to hair loss and breakage.

If you have dry and brittle hair or your skin is itchy or flaky - or you're prone to either - you should be staying away from sulfates altogether. Instead, use a sulfate-free shampoo such as Qhemet's Egyptian Wheatgrass Cleansing Tea. This gentle shampoo still lathers, but it doesn't use ingredients responsible for disrupting the lipid barrier with its suds. While it's ideal for all seasons, a sulfate-free shampoo is particularly beneficial during the dryer months when there just isn't enough moisture in the air to help replenish your strands with a humectant.

2. Add High Quality Moisture

In addition to using our Egyptian Wheatgrass shampoo and a conditioner, like our Moringa Tree Conditioning Ghee or Cocoa Tree Detanging Ghee, that won't strip your hair or add buildup, it's important to keep valuable moisture where it belongs. But not all moisture is created equal. When it comes to moisture, it's important to choose wisely because many products can appear to have positive short-term effects but may actually be more damaging in the long-run. Products such as those containing silicones or mineral oils provide shine and smoothness very quickly, immediately making damaged hair look and feel much less stressed. However - and this is one big however - the result is simply an illusion. Underneath the layer of plastic sheen, your hair is as damaged as it ever was, and because silicones and mineral oils smother the hair shaft, they actually prevent the moisture you want from reaching your hair and instead trap in dirt and other buildup - even after a wash. This quickly leads to dull, drab hair, even more breakage and ultimately a dangerous cycle of applying more and more products without seeing an improvement.

While all of our products are free of damaging ingredients such as silicones and mineral/petroleum oils; we recommend taking a look at our product guide to determine the best moisturizer for your hair based on its unique hair characteristics. However, if you're looking for the ultimate in moisture, try this long time customer favorite:

Our Amla & Olive Heavy Cream is designed for ultra dry hair, whether your hair is high porosity or you simply need a little extra when the drier season hits. This blend of nourishing oils and natural humectants helps your hair draw in moisture and keep it there, actually restoring your hair's health rather than simply making it appear more healthy in the short term. With old world oils and botanicals including castor and olive, amla, brahmi and aloe, this heavy cream is unlike any other.

3. Don't Neglect Your Scalp

If you frequently find that your scalp is dry, itchy or flaky, you're not alone. Scalp dryness is very common and can cause a host of symptoms ranging from mild irritation to extreme discomfort. Healthy hair starts at the roots, so it's important to address these symptoms as soon as they arise. If your scalp feels tighter, itchier or more sore with the changing seasons, or you suddenly find yourself avoiding your favorite black sweater, then it's time to try our Tea Tree & Lavender Therapeutic Pomade. This soothing combination of lavender, antiseptic tea tree and coconut oils is an absolute rescue remedy for flakiness and itchiness associated with scalp dryness.

For dry scalp that's simply in need of scalp conditioning that'll keep your scalp and follicles healthy and ensure that your new growth comes in soft and strong, you'll need our Castor & Amla Nourishing Pomade. This pomade is 100% vegan and contains ayurvedic amla oil to strengthen hair folicles and combat shedding and castor oil, a traditional african hair and scalp food prized for its ability to grow, strengthen and thicken hair.

By restoring your scalp's harmony, you'll not only be much more comfortable, you'll also be able to foster hair growth that's stronger and healthier at the root.

4. Use the LOC Method

Applying one of our leave-ins (conditioner), sealing oils and rich creams in layers is going to increase your hair's moisture retention abilities and add a new level of shine, pliability and softness to each delicate strand. This moisturizing method will help restore your hair's health when it's needed the most: during the dry season when a conditioner alone simply isn't enough.
