The History and Use of Castor Oil

By Qhemet Biologics

Castor Oil has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 4,000 B.C. and is native to the Ethiopian region of tropical East Africa. Evidence of its cultivation has also been discovered around 500 B.C. in central Egypt where it was employed in cosmetics, medical remedies and as a lighting oil for lamps. Castor oil is mentioned in the Ebers papyrus in recipes intended to treat several diseases and conditions. Castor oil was used in other areas of ancient and medieval Africa to process leather, in skin and hair preparations and as a medicinal. In regions such as the Sudan, Tanzania and Kenya, it was more popular than sesame oil and fetched a higher price than olive oil. Castor oil was used extensively outside of Africa in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Today, castor oil is produced pricipally in India and Brazil and is widely used in the industrial, cosmetic and phamaceutical industries.

Castor oil has been a prized staple in African hair care treatments for centuries and was brought to and cultivated in the Americas by Africans.

Castor oil is currently used in hair care products to soften, lubricate and moisturize dry hair. Its unique chemical structure gives it the ability to act as both a non-drying oil and a humectant, making it capable of drawing moisture to the hair and locking it in. This thick, rich oil is easy to fall in love with, not just for its effect on afro/coily hair but also on skin. Castor oil makes a smart addition to hydrating hair and scalp treatments and leave-in moisturizers as well as soaps, polishes and even lip glosses. It is highly valued for its ability to strengthen, grow, retain length and add shine and sheen to twists, cornrows, locs and loose hair.

The Exceptional Hair Benefits of Castor Oil

This natural oil possesses a multitude of properties that make it stand out. Naturally harvested from the castor bean, the pressed oil can range from colorless to pale yellow. Black castor oil is pressed from the seeds of roasted Castor beans. Rich in fatty acids and glycerides, this non-drying oil both hydrates and locks in moisture, making hair feel softer and healthier. It also acts as a barrier to protect the hair from harsh weather conditions.

Adding castor oil to your hair regimen can help speed up growth and thicken hair. Castor oil is also used to reduce shedding by strengthening follicles and softening ends and edges to reduce breakage and preserve length. Castor oil is a great finishing oil, capable of leaving dry, dull hair soft and lustrous for days.
